Every few years, a musical unit emerges to capture the ears of aficionados of the art form commonly referred to as ‘Jazz.” The cycle has come full circle in the embodiment of M.T.G. 360°, a group of musicians influenced by true giants of the past, keeping the Music of The Gods alive. The group consists of D. Louis Morgan, percussionist, Daryl Taylor, bassist. . . Roger ‘Keyz’ Weaver, keyboardist. M.T.G. 360° Formed in 1979, generating the dynamics which have enhanced the intensity of the award-winning playwright, Thomas Meloncon’s “The Diary of Black Men,” Now M.T.G. 360° has come into its own genius.
The driving pulse behind the group is D. Louis Morgan, founder, percussionist and principle composer. Inspired by Jack Dejohnette, Dave Weckl, Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, Alex Acuna, Elroy Carr, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Weather Report and John Coltrane, to name a few. Morgan is not only the creator of M.T.G. 360°, but is the group’s principal composer. Responding to where He gets his ideas from, he says, “I hear symphony orchestras in my sleep. I hear drums and drum rhythms in my head. Music for new compositions come at any time, anywhere.” Influenced by African, African-Cuban, Middle Eastern and Asian rhythms, Morgan explains, “I chose jazz because of the creative freedom allowed for the musician/composer to reach the utmost potential and express it through the instrument as a craftsman. Furthermore,” he says, “it is a music that comes from within, and is expressed by the musician on instrument or paper in a raw uncensored, undiluted, unhampered state.”
It is this profound love and respect for creative expression which Morgan strives for in the musical program for M.T.G. 360°, “1 want people and nature to receive our music honestly,” he states. “Just give it a good listen, a chance.”
